Abstracting the Landscape: Feeling a Place, Transforming a Memory

Abstracting the Landscape: Feeling a Place, Transforming a Memory

There are many ways to consider a landscape, for example, the look of it, the feelings it evokes, and the memories we have of it. This class explores the idea of landscape via feeling and memory. To engage this exploration, we will draw upon the lessons of past artistic masters like Joan Mitchell, Robert Motherwell, Helen Frankenthaler and Cy Twombly, and use some of the same mixed-media techniques they did to draw out this sense of landscape. Investigations of color, form, gesture and even language will factor prominently in this pursuit.

Days & Times: Thursdays, 10.29–12.10, 3pm—6pm. No class November 26
